How to Start an Internet Business with $100 Or Less

By admin · Friday, January 8th, 2010

If you’ve got $100, you’ve got more than enough money to start an internet business. How’s that for a great opportunity in the middle of a challenging economy?

Obviously, if you’ve got more money to invest in an online business, that’s even better – but you can definitely do it for $100. The reason is that as you build, you’re going to need to spend some combination of time and money; with less money, you just need to spend more time.

So here’s how you could get an internet business up and running for $100 or less

1. Pick a niche – the market you want to reach. You can do research for free by spending an afternoon in Barnes & Noble. Check out the magazine racks, the “Dummies” series of books, the “Chicken Soup” books. You’re looking for an idea that you can market around to people who have a common interest or problem. You want a market that spends money on this interest or problem.

If there are books or magazines for sale, you know you’ve got a good chance of succeeding because you’re following in the footsteps of some deep pocket companies that did some expensive market research.

2. Do your keyword research. Use Google’s free keyword tool to find out how people are searching for the information or products you’re marketing. Develop a list of at least 100 keywords you can use in your marketing.

3. Buy a domain name and hosting. This expense will vary depending on the company you use, but should be in the neighborhood of $50 per year. If you can get a domain name that uses one of your keywords, that’s ideal.

4. Build your site. There are lots of ways you can build a site inexpensively – or even using a free template. Make sure to optimize your site by using your keywords strategically. Go with a clean, uncluttered appearance, and be sure to include a subscription box where you can collect visitors’ contact information so you can build your list of subscribers.

5. Get an email service so you can stay in touch with the people who subscribe to your newsletter. There are several options, and many are very affordable with a smaller list (fewer than 500 subscribers). You’ll need a service because if you try to send hundreds of emails through your normal email provider, you’re going to run into problems.

6. If you don’t want the expense (timewise or moneywise) of creating your own product to sell, you can always promote affiliate products to your list. Each time a visitor clicks on your affiliate link and makes a purchase, you’ll share the proceeds with the merchant. It’s an easy way to get started with an internet business.

7. Drive traffic to your site. There are ways you can drive free traffic to your site – by using articles, press releases, blog posts, and videos. You can also venture into pay per click advertising to drive more traffic quickly, but it will be an added expense. If you want to use free traffic only, it may take a bit longer to make money with your online business, but it certainly can be done. In fact, there are some very successful online marketers who use only free traffic methods.

You can start an internet business with $100 or less – it just takes a little more determination and focus than it would if you had thousands of dollars. The important thing is to follow a proven step-by-step system so you can make consistent forward progress and reach your first paycheck.

Once your site is producing cash, you can always invest some back into your online business, try other tools and tactics, and build it bigger and better. But by using these seven steps, you can at least get started – and that’s the most important step of all.
